Research has proven what most of us already know–the single most important factor that fosters resiliency in children is a caring and consistent relationship with an adult. The earlier this bond is formed, the stronger it will be and the greater impact it will have on the child’s future.
Friends of the Children selects the children when they begin school. We use evidence based risk factors, including the amount of parental support the child has, the stability of their home life and their ability to adjust and perform in school.
Once selected, we commit to the children through high school graduation, no matter what. Each mentor only has eight children to support and guide until the children reach middle school. After middle school, we meet in groups, learning leadership skills and how to reach consensus. Each child will spend four hours a week with their mentor.
